Selective Endoscopic Discrectomy
The Selective Endoscopic Discectomy procedure is redefining what we call minimally invasive spine surgery. This technique utilizes an endoscope to treat herniated, protruded, extruded, or degenerative discs that are a contributing factor to leg and back pain. The endoscope allows the surgeon to use a "keyhole" incision (thru 7mm canula versus 20-25 mm tradition approach) to access the herniated disc. Muscle and tissue are dilated rather than being cut when accessing the disc. Surgery time without complications can range between 60–90 minutes under local anesthesia.
Kyphoplasty
This minimally invasive procedure is used for treatment of compression. An orthopaedic balloon is guided into the fracture within the vertebra and inflated. Once the fracture is reduced, the balloon is then deflated leaving a void for the bone cement to be inserted.
Microdiscectomy
Microdiscectomy surgery is when a small portion of bone over the nerve root and at times disc material from under the root is removed to relieve impingement on the nerve. This procedure helps leg pain by relieving the impingement on the nerve. Although, the nerve root may take weeks or even months to fully heal, patients typically feel some relief soon after surgery

Spinal Fusion
Spinal fusion is a procedure to stabilize the spine by fusing together two or more vertebrae utilizing using bone grafts, rods and screws.
Laminectomy
A laminectomy is done to remove bone from the spine to widen the spinal canal and create more space for the nerves. A discectomy removes pieces of a ruptured disc that had been causing pressure on a nerve. This surgery is most often recommended when herniated discs pinch nerves, causing leg pain, weakness in legs or feet, numbness in legs or feet, and/or problems with bowel or bladder functions.
Anterior Lumbar or Cervical Interbody Fusion
The anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a disc fusion where the approach is from the front side of the patient. During a lumbar fusion the abdominal muscles are retracted to the side, as well as abdominal contents which allows the surgeon access to the front side of the spine. When an interbody fusion is performed, the disc between two vertebra is removed and a bone graft put in its place. The graft fuses to the vertebra above and below as the body heals. Many times fusions also include the use of instrumentation to hold the vertebra and graft in place as the fusion heals.
Scoliosis Correction
For patients that have a large curve that is still progressing surgery is typically recommended. The goal is to fuse the spine so that the abnormal curve will not continue to progress. A combination of rods, cables, screws and hooks are used to move the spine back into the proper position. Once the spine fuses with the bone grafts the spine no longer moves out of place.
Clinical Trials
Disc Replacement
Florida Spine Institute has two ongoing trials for artificial disc replacements. This surgery is used for the treatment of degenerative disc disease in both the cervical and lumbar spine.
Facet Replacement
An additional study that Florida Spine Institute is currently participating is for treatment of degenerative spinal stenosis which replaces the facets with artificial joints.
